What Makar Sankranti means
Makar Sankranti marks the day the Sun moves into Capricorn (Makar) and begins its northward journey, Uttarayan, after which the days grow longer. It is one of the few Hindu festivals that follows the solar calendar rather than the moon.
People take a holy dip in rivers, give til, gur, khichdi and warm clothes in charity, and share til-gur laddoos. In Gujarat and Rajasthan the sky fills with colourful kites, while the same day is celebrated as Pongal, Magh Bihu and Khichdi in other parts of India.
Rituals and puja
