What Guru Nanak Jayanti means
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, marks the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib, and the day is observed on the full moon of Kartik.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught the message of Ik Onkar, the one God, and the equality of all people. Gurudwaras hold Akhand Path, kirtan and katha, Nagar Kirtan processions fill the streets, and langar is served to everyone who comes, without distinction.
