What Dhanteras means
Dhanteras, or Dhanatrayodashi, opens the five days of Diwali. It honours Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, along with Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the keepers of wealth.
It is the most popular day of the year to buy gold, silver, utensils and new things for the home, because purchases made today are believed to multiply prosperity. In the evening a lamp called Yama Deepam is lit outside the house for the protection of the family.
